Rent the Runway is now shipping vacation wardrobes to four W Hotels


Rent the Runway wants to take care of your vacation wardrobe.

The fashion rental company announced yesterday that it has partnered with Marriott International on a new service in which guests at four W Hotels can rent their vacation wardrobe when they check in. 

For $69, visitors at W Hotels in Aspen, South Beach, Hollywood, and Washington, D.C. can pick four items to wear during their stay, which will be delivered to their rooms.

The new service — which is called RTR Closet Concierge — launched on Thursday, with Rent the Runway calling it a ‘getaway game-changer.’

Guests can sign up on arrival and pick from Rent the Runway’s Unlimited Collection. Each hotel also had a curated collection of items tailored for the location, with wintery ski staples in Aspen and bold beachy picks in South Beach, Florida.

The chosen items are then shipped to the guests’ room, and they can leave them with the hotel Welcome Desk upon checkout.  

What’s more, the company will also have ‘mini closets’ at each hotel prestocked with location-appropriate outfits, in case guests want to swap or add on.

‘Traveling without luggage has always been my dream,’ cofounder and CEO Jennifer Hyman told WWD. ‘Travelers can simply show up and have their dream closet waiting for them in their hotel room.’

‘This idea of being able to show up on vacation … and have the perfect clothing for what you want to wear, is pretty magical,’ COO Maureen Sullivan added to CNBC.

‘The use case of being able to travel light and not have to [pack] … is such an obvious utility for us.’

W Hotels’ global brand leader Anthony Ingham noted that it was a perfect pairing. 

‘Collaborating with Rent the Runway — such a creative, conscious and trend-setting brand — allows us to reinvent the way our guests pack and dress as they travel. Skipping the packing process is a whole new level of luxury for our guests and is yet another surprising way to continue to reinvent hospitality.’ 

Though it’s starting at just four hotels, the company plans to expand to others in the future.

The innovation comes two months after Rent the Runway announced that it was halting taking on new subscribers due to ‘unforeseen issues.’ 

In September, the clothing rental service announced it would be upgrading its fulfillment operating system for sending out clothing items. 

But the change caused problems, leading RTR to cancel orders and halt new subscriptions.

‘Over the last few weeks, some of our customers have experienced delays in receiving Rent the Runway orders,’ the brand said in a statement. 

‘The delays, which began Sept. 13, are due to unforeseen issues associated with a significant transformation that we are executing in our fulfillment operation.’ 

They added: ‘All of our customers rent for meaningful events, and many members rely on our subscription service to get dressed every day. We understand how frustrating this is.’

Rent the Runway cancelled all orders made between Sept. 30 and Oct. 6, offering a full refund plus $200 — in cash, not as a store credit — with hopes that customers would come back and use it on the site.  

But many customers were still left feeling frustrated by the company.

‘I appreciate that you are trying to make things right, but I am now unable to recommend your service and will not use you in the future,’ one customer wrote on Twitter. ‘I depended on you getting dresses for an event next weekend and now am scrambling to find something appropriate in time.’

Another Twitter user wrote: ‘For a first time user this is a HUGE let down. I travel for a wedding in four days and will now have to lose time from work to find a dress. Huge disappointment.’

Rent the Runway has some 600,000 subscribers, in addition to millions of customers who rent items individually. 

Since the snafu earlier this fall, the company is once again accepting subscribers to its Unlimited plan ($159/month) and Update plan ($89/month).
