It was all going well for a group of holidaymakers who had taken their luxury yacht worth $306,000 (£225,000) into the waters off the coast of Miami – until a huge wave engulfed the bow of their vessel.

A man and a woman in their 30s can be seen sitting in the bow of the boat whilst enjoying a spot of sunbathing whilst three of their friends remain in the cabin.

But their relaxation is cut short when a series of giant waves splurge over the front of the boat, causing them to panic.

The pair can be seen racing from the bow into the cabin after being drenched by the surf.

The man is then seen frantically waving in the direction of the harbor, trying to alert the coastguard of the perilous situation they found themselves in.

Fortunately for those on board – three women and two men – the boat did not sink and they made it safely to land.

John Loran, 42, captured the footage at Baker’s Haulover Inlet in Miami, Florida. The inlet is a man-made channel connecting the northern end of Biscayne Bay with the Atlantic Ocean.

‘In the Haulover inlet, sitting in the bow is not a great idea,’ John said. ‘It can get really rough and you’re going to get wet. They clearly weren’t too experienced.

‘Their snail’s pace caused the waves to crash over them and almost sank the boat.

‘Sometimes travelling a little faster around other vessels can seem counter-intuitive, but that’s what was needed here.

‘The inlet can get really rough, so my advice for novices would be to read up on how to navigate it before you visit or just avoid it altogether.

‘Fortunately for these guys, the incident didn’t end in disaster.’

The inlet is known for having strong currents and poor tidal conditions, making its navigation a treacherous one for less experienced sea captains.

Maintaining a fast speed is vital in poor conditions to prevent the waves from crashing over the bow of the boat – something that the owner of this boat failed to do.
