Fireworks comet etching, Fremont Street


LAS VEGAS – When the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, there will be plenty to places to watch Sin City’s world-class fireworks display. 

The official title of this year’s New Years bash, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority unveiled this month, is America’s Party 2020.

The Strip’s legendary pyrotechnic show will light up the desert sky from seven rooftops:

MGM Grand, Aria, Planet Hollywood, Caesars Palace, Treasure Island, The Venetian and Stratosphere.

Exclusive ‘comet etching’

Grucci, the company orchestrating the display, will ring ring in 2020 with a brand new, exclusive feature called “comet etching.”

Translation: A New Years countdown made of fireworks.

“This will be an etching of the 10-digit countdown going from the tops of four of the properties: MGM, Aria, Venetian and Stratosphere,” said Grucci Director of Business Development Scott Cooper at a press conference, “obviously strategically placed north, south and in the middle so everybody has a view of this amazing countdown going up about 200 feet.”

New Fremont Street Experience canopy goes live

On New Year’s Eve, wanderers standing beneath the famed Fremont Street Experience canopy will see for the first time the $32 million renovation of Viva Vision – the world’s largest single video screen.

The upgrade to 16,433,152 pixels means the screen will glow seven times brighter than the existing canopy with four times the resolution.

Here’s how it compares to televisions often found in the living room: A top-end 4K ultra high-definition television packs about 8.2 million pixels.

Where to ring in the new year

The LINQ Las Vegas, 3535 S Las Vegas Blvd.:

Catch the fireworks aboard the High Roller – the world’s tallest observation wheel. The attraction will offer an assortment of “Ring in the Roaring 2020s” packages that include a New Year’s pre-party with open bar, appetizers, entertainment and a toast at midnight.
