Kayak’s 2020 Travel Hacker Guide has just the spots for domestic travelers looking to save a few bucks: the United States and Mexico.
Eight of Kayak’s top 10 wallet-friendly destinations this year are U.S. cities: Orlando and Tampa, Florida; Las Vegas; Raleigh, North Carolina; Dallas; Albuquerque, New Mexico; Denver; and Salt Lake City.
The two other destinations are both in Mexico: Guadulajara and Puerto Vallarta. All 10 cities have a median airfare of $514 or less round trip all year, with most fares well below that.
Kayak is a travel website where travelers can search for deals on flights, hotels, rental cars and cruises. Its travel trends reports are based on the most popular searches.
Kayak notes that the airports in Dallas, Denver and Salt Lake City offer convenient rail connections to downtown. Trains in Guadalajara take visitors to where tequila is made (and take them home, safely). For a different kind of trip, Kayak reminds travelers that Denver has a thriving (and legal) recreational marijuana scene.
For those aiming to flash their passports – and stretch their wallets – five of Kayak’s top 10 trending destinations for 2020 are in Europe: Madrid and Barcelona in Spain; Athens, Greece; Lisbon, Portugal; and London.
Other top trending destinations include Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands; Key West, Florida; Big Island; Hawaii; San Jose del Cabo, Mexico; and San Juan, Puerto Rico.
For solo travelers, Kayak says South America is the place to go it alone. Three Colombian cities made the list: Bogota, Medellin and Cartagena. Ushuaia, Argentina; Rio de Janeiro; and Santiago, Chile round out top destinations on the continent. Other top solo cities: Nuuk, Greenland; Ibiza, Spain; Fez, Morocco; and Trinidad and Tobago.
Want to go off the beaten path? Four more South American cities make that list: La Serena and Puerto Varas, Chile; Cordoba, Argentina; and Jijoca de Jericoacoara, Brazil.
Other top under-the-radar escapes, which range in population from 6,000 to 1 million: Port Elizabeth, South Africa; Tbilisi, Georgia; Santa Maria, Cape Verde; Albufeira, Portugal; Essaouira, Morocco; and Hua Hin, Thailand.
